Paper Crane exists within the shared, unceded, ancestral territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
Reconciliation is an ongoing process of learning and unlearning. Working in health, we are aware of the impact of intergenerational trauma, historical violence, racism, and current political tensions on the wellness of both individuals and the communities they exist within. While acknowledging this is important, it is vital we also endeavour to recognize and uplift joy, creativity, healing, and success - which are also parts of Indigenous identity.
When it comes to healthcare, there is much for us to learn from traditional Indigenous perspectives on wellbeing: recognizing that healing is relational, non-linear, and involves balance of mind, body, and spirit with both the community and environment.
"Wellness is directly related to balance and harmony and the demonstration of care and compassion for one's self and one's community." - from Renee Linklater in Decolonizing Trauma Work
